Ocracoke and Baseball

Ocracoke kids love baseball. Out of the 1,000 residents, 100 of them are kids who want to play baseball.  Before the new baseball field was built, there was no such thing as a home game.  All games were "away" games, involving 2 ferry rides and a lot of driving.  The only place to practice was in back yards. In spite of these challenges, the Ocracoke Little League team won their league championship in 2011.  Having their own baseball field seemed out of reach, because most of the land belongs to the National Park Service, and any remaining property was too small or too expensive.  There was only ONE tract of land left on Ocracoke large enough for a baseball field. It was a 5 acre tract owned by the Burrus family. They agreed to sell the land. Ocracokers are resourceful people.  A fundraising effort called "the field of dreams" took 3 years. The first game was March 2015. 200 people attended (20% of the entire population). Click on the links below for more information.
