Blackbeard the Pirate

Edward Teach, or Blackbeard the Pirate, used to hide in an area of Ocracoke on the south end of the island known as Springer's Point.  The waterway was known as "Teach's Hole."  Blackbeard lost his head in 1718 in a battle in Ocracoke waters with Lt. Robert Maynard of the Royal Navy. Though none has been found, many still search the island for his buried treasure.
