The Lighthouse

The treacherous waters surrounding the Outer Banks are known as "the Graveyard of the Atlantic." Over 5,000 ships have sunk there, due to shifting sandbars and tropical storms. The US Lighthouse Service originally built the lighthouse at Ocracoke in 1794.  It is only 75 feet tall.
